2015… Move Faster!
With two highly anticipated, high budget, higher everything-to-blow-your-mind movies scheduled for release next year, that’s probably the mantra of every superhero loving fan right now. Batman Vs. Superman is due to release in March 2016, while Suicide Squad is set for an August 2016 release. The release of Suicide Squad after Batman Vs. Superman is no coincidence because, as you’ll soon find out, both movies are reportedly connected in sequence.
Batman and Superman are well known in the U.S. and globally, but audiences in many other countries may not be as familiar with the Suicide Squad. They will, however, definitely recognize some key characters in the movie – the Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc and Deadshot.
The other members of the Suicide Squad – Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Katana, El Diablo and Slipknot – are not as well recognized characters outside of the comic fandom universe. But the list of supervillains appearing in this movie does not stop. Reports are that many others from the DC universe appear as cameos throughout the movie.
So this post is for both types audiences – familiar and unfamiliar with the Suicide Squad – to give both a brief outline of what all the excitement is about and what we know so far about the movie.
Before we move ahead, here’s the Suicide Squad’s trailer:
What’s The Suicide Squad About?
Take a bunch of supervillains from the DC universe put them together as a team and send them on missions nobody else is willing to go.
If they succeed, great!
If not, the government can blame them and deny any association. Expendable assets is what they are called. Hence, the term Suicide Squad. It’s as simple as that.
So why would hardcore, demented criminals agree to do good things? That’s where Amanda Waller (Played by Viola Davis) comes in. In the comics, Waller is a “ruthless, high-ranking government official who uses intelligence, guile, and sheer intimidation to achieve her aims, often in the name of national security.”
“Getting people to act their own self-interests is what I do for a living,” says Amanda Waller in the trailer.
How does she make these criminals act in their own self-interest is a matter of speculation. There have been reports that the Suicide Squad members are fitted with micro bombs to ensure their cooperation.
What’s All The Excitement About?
The expectations from this movie, in my opinion, are on three things… Darkness, Psycho Craziness and Crazier Action Scenes.
With characters such as the Joker and Harley Quinn, all three and especially craziness come guaranteed.
The Joker (Played by Jared Leto)
The Joker is a character who needs no introduction. He’s the Clown Prince of Crime. A diabolical, scheming agent of destruction masked behind madness. He’s also going to be one of the biggest selling points of this movie. The new look of the Joker is a good hint as to how much more bigger and badder (and insaner) the character will be. Jared Leto faces a really high benchmark with Heath Ledger’s Joker in the lead. There are a lot of expectations riding on this character. So is the Joker the real villain or a wild card in the deck? Read on to find out…
Harley Quinn (Played by Margot Robbie)
Harley Quinn, the destructive “girlfriend” of the Joker, will be appearing on the big screen for the first time. And a lot of guys are waiting impatiently to watch her in action. They say crazy girls are a blast… if that’s true Harley Quinn is expected to be an atom bomb. She is seductive, psychopathic and has a dark sense of humor. Harley Quinn’s look in the movie brings all her characteristics together in a nice tightly wrapped package. Speculation is that there is a fallout between Harley Quinn and the Joker in the movie. More about that later in this post. By the way, love the “Daddy’s Lil Monster” t-shirt.
Deadshot (Played by Will Smith)
Another Batman adversary, Deadshot is the world’s deadliest marksman. Deadshot’s real name is Floyd Lawton and the guilt of accidentally killing his brother becomes the reason behind his current identity. Will Smith, who plays Deadshot, is speculated to bring an emotional touch to this movie as it depicts his relationship with his daughter. He appears to bring a little sanity (well… relative sanity) in the group of crazies. For the role, Will Smith spent a day with Navy SEALS and Army Rangers, practicing firing a Glock 9mm handgun and an AR-15 assault rifle. Deadshot’s costume is the closest look to the comic and game version of the character. The writing on Deadshot’s collar – which reads “The Light” and “The Way” a possible reference to the bible – is speculated to represent him as a religious man.
Killer Croc (Played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)
Killer Croc’s real name is Waylon Jones, who is born with atavism, a form of mutation that gave him reptilian traits. The character’s look retains a humanoid form instead of the comic versions where he is more reptile than human. Not much is known about the role Killer Croc will be playing in the movie. Speculation is he will be one of the many incarcerated supervillains.
Enchantress (Cara Delevingne)
The look of Enchantress is significantly different from the comics where she dons a more witch-like appearance. The movie poster depicts her more like the female version of an Aghori from India with long dreadlocks, chanting beads and what appears to be a half crested moon on her head which kind of goes with her alter ego as June Moone. In the comics, Moone stumbles upon her magical powers and transforms into Enchantress who has a dark side to her. Moone struggles to control the Enchantress from taking over completely, sort of like Bruce Banner and the Hulk.
Captain Boomerang (Played by Jai Courtney)
This Aussie supervillain usually appears against Flash. As his name suggests, boomerangs are the weapon of choice for his evil deeds. In the comics, Captain Boomerang is an overconfident, annoying character in the Suicide Squad and has been known to be racist. But the modern versions of the comic transformed him to a more brutal and brooding personality. The movie is expected depict this modernized personality of the character.
Rick Flag (Played by Joel Kinnaman)
The role of Rick Flag Jr. for the movie was initially offered to Tom Hardy but he was later replaced by Joel Kinnaman after scheduling conflicts forced Hardy to drop the role. In the comics, Rick Flag was a member of the original Suicide Squad. He was later replaced by his son Rick Flag Jr., the character used in the movie. Rick Flag Jr. was working for the government long before the other characters come on board. Rick Flag Jr. despises working with criminals but reluctantly accepted the job. How Rick Flag Jr. will be portrayed in the movie is unknown.
Katana (Played by Karen Fukuhara)
Katana, or Tatsu Yamashiro, is a trained samurai who originally was a superhero and a former Justice League member. This Japanese character brings in a little supernatural flavor to the movie just like Enchantress. Katana’s sword, the Soultaker, captures the spirits of people who come under its blade and allows her to communicate with them.
Slipknot (Played by Adam Beach)
Slipknot, or Christopher Weiss, is a character obsessed with ropes. The character achieved little in the comics world as a supervillain. In the comics, he develops a formula for durable ropes which he uses. A trained assassin and masterful at using all types of ropes, including unbreakable ones, to tie people and strangle them.
El Diablo (Played by Jay Hernandez)
Fictional characters named El Diablo are plenty in the comics world. But the El Diablo being played in the movie Suicide Squad is Chato Santana. He’s an ex-gangster who is speculated to have pyrokinetic powers. He is known to have burned down a building that contained some other gangsters who owed him a debt. But after finding out that the building also had women and children who died in the fire, Chato surrenders to the police out of guilt.
What do we know so far?
Based on all that we know so far about the characters in the movie, I can speculate that Harley Quinn, the Joker and Deadshot will most likely be the lead roles.
But who is the villain? Who are they fighting against? What’s the mission of the Suicide Squad in this movie?
According to a report by Latino-Review, citing two unnamed sources, here is what the plot of the movie is:
The first source says:
Deadshot and Harley Quinn meet early when Deadshot is assassinating an inmate that is being transported from Arkham. Quinn disrupts the hit when she tries to break Joker out and both are captured and taken to Amanda Waller’s prison.
Waller has Joker moved to the prison as a means to keep Quinn in check. He spends most of the film in a cell, very much like Hannibal Lecter, until he breaks out in the end.
Boomerang is already in the Squad and there is a contention between he and Deadshot, Deadshot killed his father.
The team is tasked on a mission to prevent ‘bio weaponry’ from being sold to Lex Luthor by a human trafficking gang. The gang is handing over the Enchantress to Luthor who it is implied wants her for magical abilities. They kidnap her and take her back to the prison where she is kept in an underground area, which has all sorts of genetic freaks imprisoned including a King Shark.
Rick Flag is there as a watchdog over Waller. The twist is his character is revealed as being in league with the villain, Rick Flag Sr at the end. (This is what I believe may have been the reason Hardy left) It is out of left field. They want the weapons that Waller has amassed.
There is a lot of action in the script but it primarily deals with Deadshot, Harley Quinn and the Joker. Flag is more of a government agent than anything else before his reveal as a villain.
The second source told the Latino-Review:
A draft of the script has been finished and is being circulated between several executives pending a rewrite. The first part of the film concerns the capture of Lawton and Harley Quinn and afterwards they are taken to a maximum-security prison run by a warden called Waller. They are implanted with explosive devices and forced to be part of a mission where they are attacking an arms dealer’s convoy. They are supposed to steal a weapon but end up capturing a woman called June, she has a split personality and her evil side is a sorceress.
Waller is tracking down and capturing every super powered hero and villain and it is implied that she is after Batman but he is not in the film, only mentioned and shown on camera footage. The film is being used as a set up for the franchises villains and not only the Suicide Squad. Belle Reve (the prison) is home to many of villains beyond the leads. The script ends with a prison riot where most of them escape, including the Joker. The Joker has a large part in the movie but doesn’t get involved in any action scene until the very end during the riot where he kills several people.
The script has been getting much praise in the studio. The rumor is Tom Hardy left because of the changes to his characters, although he is in two of the main action scenes.
The first rumored plot suggests the villain to be Lex Luthor who is played by Jesse Eisenberg in the movie Batman Vs. Superman. This does seem plausible considering the connections being shown between both movies. But all these are just rumors and it’s better to take them with a pinch of salt.
Origin Story Of Harley Quinn
Based on the trailer, speculation is that the movie reveals Harley Quinn’s origin story. The trailer reveals a hijack of sorts at Arkham Asylum. One of the scenes shows goons capturing Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Arkham, who later becomes Harley Quinn. The Joker is seen approaching a table on which Quinzel is strapped to and then comes Joker’s creepy dialogue… “Oh I’m not gonna kill ya… I’m just gonna hurt ya… really, really… bad.”
It is believed the Joker tortures Harleen Quinzel into insanity and she later becomes Harley Quinn and the Joker’s “girlfriend”. So why do they go their separate ways? Speculation from Latino-Review.com is that Harley Quinn feels guilty about the death of Jason Todd aka Robin who is murdered by the Joker in the Batman Vs. Superman movie. Robin’s death is implied in the trailer of Batman Vs. Superman. The trailer shows Ben Affleck staring at Robin’s costume with the words “Jokes on you Batman” spray painted on it.
The trailer of Suicide Squad also reveals the appearance of the Dark Knight hanging on to the top of a car in which Harley Quinn and the Joker seem to be making an escape. The scene is speculated to appear after the Joker’s escape from Arkham.
Other Character Appearances
Some other characters appearing in the movie include Jonny Frost (Played by Jim Parrack). Frost is a low level thug and the Joker’s bodyguard. He seems to appear in the trailer too where he is leading the Joker through what seems to be Arkham Asylum.
Another character rumored to appear in the movie is the Batman villain Dr. Hugo Strange. In the comics, he is one of Batman’s oldest villains even before the Joker and Catwoman. In the movie, he is rumored to appear as a psychiatrist interacting with the Joker.
Suicide Squad Might Surpass Batman Vs. Superman… but not by much
A lot of stuff we know about the movie is speculation and rumors so not everything here might materialize on screen. However, here’s something we do know…
The official video trailer of Suicide Squad has more views (48,517,931) than the official video trailer of Batman Vs. Superman (43,531,794).
That shows a lot of interest in Suicide Squad and for good reason.
Since Batman and Superman are popular, well-known characters, the audience already knows what to expect from them and from the movie. There’s been a bunch of Dark Knight and Batman movies, and while Man of Steel was the only Superman movie in the recent past, there have been plenty of Superman movies before.
The audience already knows Batman is going to use kryptonite, the green crystal that weakens Superman, to his advantage in the movie.
What there hasn’t been before is such a long lineup of supervillains. Except for the Joker, I don’t think there has ever been any big screen movie involving any of the other supervillains mentioned. This intrigues the audience. This gives them something new to watch.
There is a mystery surrounding this movie because nobody knows what to expect. The more details and rumors that keep coming out, the more the plot thickens.
And it’s just not about the ‘new’ factor. The looks of the characters in the movie are unique and realistic. To add to it, it’s a dark movie. There are no boy scouts. This is a pure anti-hero movie.
Based on all these factors, I’m making a guess that Suicide Squad will surpass Batman Vs. Superman… but not by a large margin.
Well, time tells all… and we’ll know what happens in time.
